A Visual Representation to Manage Multiple Environments
I have just started working with a team who manage an internally hosted
third party system. There are a number of environments which are used by
different workstreams who are all developing enhancements on the system.
The system has monthly drops onto production, but the workstreams can run
for different lengths based on their complexity.
Each environment contains a dev, test and UAT server with a single
pre-production server before code goes live.
For example, workstream A may have begun development in May with view to
going live in November, workstream B (which is much smaller) may have
begun dev in June, with a live date of August. Workstream C may be
beginning now with a live date in February and another small workstream D
begins work soon and goes live in December.
Some workstreams, such as B and D above can use the same environments, as
they run concurrently, whereas over workstreams overlap and therefore need
their own environments.
I am trying to find a way to articulate this pictorially. I would like a
view of environments by project and project by environment. I know the
start and end dates of each workstreams development lifecycle phases and I
could produce two diagrams in Visio and maintain this by hand, but I am
sure there are better solutions which can crunch the data and output
something visual.
Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated!
